Hands‑On Geology, History and Fun
Our Mapatiza Underground Gemstone Mine Tour offers students a unique, immersive learning experience. Guided tours take pupils through a replica underground mine with colourful passages and chambers, where they see how raw gems form and are processed. Above ground, they can view the mine-run where African gemstones are sorted and polished and explore a showroom filled with loose gemstones, crystals, beads, carvings, and jewellery. This combination of geology, mining heritage and practical demonstration turns an ordinary field trip into a memorable adventure.
Curriculum Connections: Aligning with Natural Science
Mineral Identification and Hardness – Our guides teach students how to identify minerals using the Mohs Hardness Scale, which ranks minerals from the hardest (diamond, 10) to the softest (talc, 1). Students can test samples and learn why hardness matters for jewellery, construction and industry.
Pegmatites and Mineral Formation – Pegmatites are extreme igneous rocks formed during the final stage of a magma’s crystallisation. They contain exceptionally large crystals and can host rare minerals and gems such as tourmaline, aquamarine and topaz. During the tour, we explain how pockets of superheated water rich in dissolved ions allow crystals to grow rapidly, sometimes to several metres.
Local Mining Heritage – South Africa’s mining history comes alive as students learn how miners discovered, extracted and polished gemstones. Our guides discuss the impact of mining on communities and the environment, fostering a sense of heritage and responsibility.
Activities: Engage, Explore, Discover
Gemstone Scratch Patch – Students can sift through a scratch patch to collect tumbled stones and and reveal hidden crystals (activities can be customised to suit age groups).
Crystal Identification Workshops – Hands‑on sessions teach children to distinguish between minerals by colour, lustre and hardness.
Educational Kits & Souvenirs – The adjacent showroom offers affordable kits, books and souvenirs so pupils can continue learning at home.
Safety & Logistics
Safety is our priority. We require an appropriate teacher-to-student ratio and recommend one adult per 10–15 learners. Tours typically last 30–45 minutes, but we can adjust the pace to suit different age groups. The underground passages are well lit and have secure walkways; however, closed-toe shoes are essential. Our operating hours are Monday to Saturday, 08:00–16:00, and Sunday & Public Holidays, 09:00–14:00. For school groups, we encourage bookings during term time; contact us for customised educational materials and schedules.
